How to Fix Chkdsk
Check disk is a utility included in Windows operating systems that scans and attempts to fix errors on hard drives and other media. Check disk, also known as "Chkdsk," was combined with the scan disk utility in the latest versions of Windows. This combination allows Chkdsk to repair bad sectors and inform you about any errors it is unable to fix.

1
Confirm that the error is occurring with the Chkdsk utility specifically and is not due to a faulty hard drive. Go to "Start" and "My Computer." Right click on another hard drive or removable media such as a USB flash drive or a SD card. Choose "Properties." Click on "Tools." Click on "Check Now" to start the scan. If Chkdsk can scan another drive successfully the original hard drive you attempted to repair may need to be replaced.

2
Insert your Windows installation disk into your computer. Restart the computer. Press a key to boot from the CD when you see "Press any key to boot from CD." Hit "R" to enter the Windows Recovery Console.

Press "1" to enter your Windows installation. If you have a multi-boot system you will see multiple numbers. Choose the number for the operating system with the nonfunctioning Chkdsk utility. Type "chkdsk /p" and hit "Enter" once the command window appears. Chkdsk runs directly off of the disc. If Chkdsk is unable to complete while running off of the Windows installation disc, the hard drive it is scanning needs to be replaced.
