How to Join a Nonprofit Board

How to Join a Nonprofit Board thumbnail
Being a member of a nonprofit board can be a rewarding, yet challenging experience.

Joining a volunteer board is a task that can be highly rewarding but takes a time commitment--some boards more than others. Nonprofit boards vary greatly in the number of times they meet, ranging from monthly to once a year. They also vary in the workload that members carry. Some boards are decision making only, such as those funding grants, while others may require board members to write reports and grants, attend meetings to represent the organization or create policies and procedures. Take all of these factors into account when deciding if being on a nonprofit board is right for you.

Instructions

    • 1

List your interests, available time and special skills. Think about what you could provide to a board. For example, do you have accounting experience and could bring that to a board? Do you have marketing experience, experience in the education or legal fields? You will want to be clear in terms of what skills you can offer the board.

    • 2

Update your resume. Many boards must have elections, and voting members will view your resume. Be sure your resume highlights the background and experience you have that relates to the board you are applying for.

    • 3

Research local nonprofit organizations. Refer to the list you made detailing your interests, and look for nonprofits that match those interests.

    • 4

Contact the organizations that you are interested in joining. They will tell you their process for adding new board members, as each board functions differently in terms of adding members, term limits and total number of members allowed.

    • 5

Ask the organizations if they can meet with you to explain what responsibilities the board has and how much time and work they expect of each board member. Refer to your list in terms of how much time you have to ensure that you can be a productive member.

    • 6

Follow the organizations process for becoming a board member for the organization you select, and follow through with your commitment.
