How to Rename Batch Files in OS X

Sometimes, you may want to take large groups of files---like those downloaded from a digital camera---and rename them all according to a consistent pattern. This can be tedious and unpleasant if you're forced to rename each individual file. Mac OS provides utilities to "batch rename" files---perform a single rename operation on as many files as you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Apple's small Batch File Rename application.

    • 2

Click and drag to select a group of files---as large as you want---to be renamed. Drag this group onto the Batch File Rename application icon.

    • 3

Select the rename action you want to perform from the pop-up menu, click "OK," and enter the details of your operation.

    • 4

Perform more advanced batch renaming operations with the free utility Name Mangler. Drag files into the Name Mangler window, select your desired operation from the drop-down menu, and enter the operation details in the fields that appear. Name Mangler also provides a scripting language, so that advanced users may program the precise changes they want to make.
