How to Split in WinZip

When a file becomes too big for convenient handling, you can compress it with the commercial WinZip program. This software compresses files through a variety of standards and works with a point-and-click interface, menus and buttons. However, the compressed archive may still prove big for storage on hard media, or for easy transmission via email or the Internet. In that case, you can use WinZip to split the file into smaller pieces that you distribute as a related group.

Instructions

    • 1

Run WinZip to display the program window.

    • 2

Click "New" to display the "New Archive" dialog. Navigate to the folder in which to store the archives and then enter a name for the zip archive. Avoid using numbers in the name to eliminate user confusion over the automatic split file number extensions.

    • 3

Click "OK" to close the dialog box and automatically display the "Add File" dialog box. Navigate to the file that you want to include in the archive. Click the file to select it.

    • 4

Choose a size for each of the split zip pieces from the "Split Zip File" drop-down menu. You can also specify your own size increment by choosing "Other Size" and then entering a value in the "Other Size" box. The minimum increment is 64 KB.

    • 5

Click "OK" to add the file to the archive. A status box appears showing the progress of the compression. Then a message box appears to inform you that the file has been added and compressed. Click "OK" to close the box.

    • 6

Choose "File" and then "Exit" to close the dialog box. Open the compression location using your favorite file manager to see the split zip files. They have the same file name and sequentially numbered extensions.
