How to Program an Emerson VCR to Record
When you don't want to miss a certain television program while away from home or sleeping, you can set your Emerson VCR's timer to record it automatically. You also can program the VCR to record an entire series (such as a daily soap opera or any show that airs at specific times) so that you never miss an episode. Most Emerson VCR's follow a standard procedure for timer recording. However, each model varies slightly and command prompts may vary. Consult your user's manual for detailed instructions and functionality specific to your unit.

1
Set your VCR's clock if you haven't done so already. If the time clock isn't set correctly, the unit will not turn on automatically at the correct time. Press the "Menu" key on the remote control and select "Clock Set." Use the "Play" and "Stop" buttons to select the date, hours and minutes. Press "F.Fwd" to move on to the next setting. Once the date and time are properly set, press "C.Reset" or "Exit" to save the settings.
-
2
Set the recording timer to capture a future program by pressing "Menu" and select "Timer Recording."
-
-
3
Use the "Play" and "Stop" buttons to move the cursor forward and backward. Press the "F.Fwd" key to move on to the next program you wish to record.
-
4
Assign each program you want to record a number. Select the program type. You will have a choice between a one-time recording, a daily program or weekly program that airs at a specific day and time.
-
5
Select the start and end time for each program or series. This process tells the machine what time to turn itself on automatically and when to switch off after recording.
-
6
Set the channel number you want to record.
-
7
Select the tape speed: If you want top quality, you will only get about two hours worth of video on a standard videotape. EP setting records four hours of tape at medium quality. The SP setting yields six hours of recording time, but at a low audio/video quality.
-
8
Press "Rewind" to go back and make any corrections to the timer program settings. Select "F.Fwd" when finished.
-
9
Repeat steps 2 to 8 to add additional timer recordings as desired.
-
10
Hit the "Exit" button to close out the menu when you have added all the programs you want to record.
-
11
Insert a fresh VHS tape into the VCR. If you are recording over a used videotape, ensure it isn't write-protected. Check to see if the plastic tab on the left end of the tape has been removed. If the write-protect tab is missing, cover the slot with a piece of tape. You can record on the tape again.
-
12
Rewind or cue the videotape to the point where you wish the recording to begin.
-
13
Press the "Power" button to turn the unit off. The timer indicator light should show up on the display panel to indicate the Emerson VCR is set and ready to record.

Tips & Warnings
Set your timer to switch off a few minutes after the show is scheduled to end. This process keeps you from missing the last few minutes of your favorite program in the event that your clock might be a minute or two off or a show is postponed due to a breaking news event.
Emerson products also are marketed under the brand names of Funai and Emerson Research. Emerson stopped manufacturing home electronics in 2001, handing all manufacturing and marketing over to the Funai Corporation.
When you have your timer set to record a show, don't change the channel on the TV/cable box. If you change the channel, the programs will not record (you'll wind up with another channel on tape or the dreaded blue screen). Keep your box set to Channel 3 or 4--whichever one the user's manual specifies--and use your VCR remote to channel surf instead.
