How to Become a Locksmith for Free
Fourteen states require registration and/or certification for locksmiths, and even to work in other states you need to learn the trade first. There are two ways of financing your education. The first is to work as an apprentice to a master, where you can learn on the job and use your earnings to complete your certification. The second option is to get a scholarship from the Associated Locksmiths of America. The best career course, however, would be to pursue both options simultaneously.

1
Visit local locksmiths and ask for an opportunity. For the most part, locksmiths still work in owner-operated small shops, which means you can talk to the master with relative ease. However, do not approach the locksmith unprofessionally. Treat this occasion like you would any other business interview and be prepared to answer why you want the job and why you are suited to it. Explain your intention to make this a career and your desire to learn the craft. Also mention that you would like to apply for a scholarship in the field, which will show that you are serious. The Associated Locksmiths of America website's locksmith search link will be highly valuable during this process.

2
Scan your local newspaper for job listings by locksmiths. In addition to personal visits to the locksmiths, keep an eye on help wanted ads in your local paper and web sites, such as Craigslist, where small businesses often advertise. If a particular opening has already been filed, ask which other locksmiths in the area might be looking for help and leave your contact information.

Apply for a scholarship at Associated Locksmiths of America's Scholarship Foundation. The application form asks how long you have been in the business. Therefore, it is best to apply when you are already working, even if it is a part-time apprenticeship. You should even consider taking an unpaid apprenticeship position, where you could help a master without pay until you have proved yourself and can take over some of his tasks. This will make it easier to find an apprenticeship and look excellent on your application.

Enroll in a certification course offered by the Associated Locksmiths of America. The organization offers a wide variety of classes, including online programs.
