How Do I Become a Chef With Hep C?
While it is not a condition that is necessarily life threatening, Hepatitis C (or Hep C) is a difficult disease to live with primarily because of the social stigmas associated with the virus as well as the chronic fatigue accompanying it. If you have Hep C and wish to become a chef, you can do so, but it will require a strict adherence to certain hygiene routines as well as the courage to be honest with employers and colleagues regarding your condition. This will ensure that the best safety practices are consistently carried out to guard against contaminating the kitchen environment.

1
Obtain the necessary training to become a chef by attending a local culinary school or culinary arts program at a vocational/technical school. Notify your instructors of your condition since they can provide you with tips and techniques to help you avoid cutting yourself. Hep C can be spread through contact with blood. They can also offer advice regarding the best ways to clean work surfaces if there is an accident and possible contamination.

2
Maintain good hygiene throughout your training and after you find a job as a chef. This includes showering daily, wearing clean clothing for every shift and leaving personal items out of kitchen areas. Wash your hands frequently, especially after using the restroom, being sure to clean under your fingernails too. Keep your hair covered well at all times. Consider cutting it short, or if you have long hair, keep it pulled back.

3
Clean up any accidents involving blood, feces or bodily fluids right away and be sure to disinfect the area. If you are unable to clean up the area yourself due to injury, be sure to let your employer or colleagues know of your condition so that they can take the necessary safety precautions when cleaning. Additionally, although the risk of transmission through saliva or mucus is small, keep colleagues and customers safe by staying home when you are sick.
-
4
Take good care of yourself by eating right, drinking lots of water, and exercising regularly since this can help your body fight off other infections more easily so that you don't have to miss work because of illness. Find ways to relax and keep your stress levels low. Additionally, make sure you are getting plenty of rest as Hep C causes chronic fatigue. Being tired can cause more accidents to happen, increasing the risk of you cutting yourself during the course of your duties and potentially contaminating the kitchen environment or other people.
