Highlights help create definition in the hair and enhance the colors of your eyes and face. As "My Hair Style" reports, highlights have become a more popular choice over coloring your hair completely. You must choose the right shade and placement of highlights. For a subtle look, stick to highlights a shade or two lighter than your natural hair color. For a more dramatic look, opt for a contrasting color such as cherry red on brown hair or bright pink on blonde.

Wrap the towel around your neck to cover your shoulders and top. The towel will catch any spills.

Prepare the hair color. The instructions for mixing may vary from one brand of highlighting kit to another, so read over the instructions before getting started.

Brush hair through to prepare for coloring. Highlighting your hair will be much easier if the hair is smooth and not tangled.

Put on a pair of latex gloves. These should come included in your highlighting kit.

Pull a small section of hair out from the back of your head about 1/4 inch in width. For chunkier highlights, dye sections of hair 1/2 to 1 inch wide. Starting at the back and working your way to the front works best because it helps you avoid smearing pieces you have already dyed.

Rub dye onto this section of hair. Start at the root and work your way down to the ends to ensure the lightest part of the highlight shows at the top of the hair shaft

Gather more random sections of hair around your head, working from the back to the front and dyeing each in the same manner. You can highlight as few or as many pieces as desired.

Wait the suggested amount of time. Typically for highlights the wait time is between 45 minutes and 1 hour.

Rinse the dye out of your hair and style as desired.
