How to Activate OEM in XP

Windows XP comes with an original equipment manufacturer activation to help establish with programs you use on XP that the copy of XP you have is legitimate. In fact, the OEM needs to be activated in order to use XP. Fortunately, for a user with an Internet connection, Microsoft made it simple to activate XP's OEM over the Internet. You even have the option of registering your copy of XP while activating it.

      Click the "Start" button on the lower-left side of the screen and highlight "All Programs" on the Start menu.

      Highlight "Accessories" and select the "System Tools" option. Click "Activate Windows."

      Select the "Yes, let's activate Windows over the Internet now" option. Click "Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement," then click "Back," then finally click "Next."

      To activate and register Windows at the same time, click "Yes, I want to register and activate Windows at the same time" and follow the on-screen instructions. Otherwise, click "No, I don't want to register now; let's just activate Windows" and click "Next."

      Wait while the Activation Wizard establishes a connection with an activation server and processes the activation request. When the "You have successfully activated your copy of Windows" message appears, click "OK" to finish the activation process.

Tips & Warnings

  • The OEM can also be activated by phone. Follow most of the same steps as activating it by Internet, only select the "Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now" option to lead you to the phone number to call.
