Diesel mechanics have a higher pay scale than general automotive mechanics. Diesel mechanics who are well trained have a high probability of job placement. As a nation we rely on diesel trucks to transport nearly everything we buy. Schools and municipalities have fleets of buses that need constant maintenance. Construction firms need up-keep on equipment that is very expensive to replace. Because of the high cost of diesel engines, and the increasing complexity as diesel engines become more efficient and computer controlled, a diesel mechanic needs training to be of value to a company.

Diesel Truck Check programs at local colleges, universities and trade schools. Many schools have applied science degrees or certification courses for diesel mechanics. Enroll and take specific courses for diesel mechanics. Schools often have placement opportunities for graduates with local companies.

Apply for training programs directly with large trucking companies or bus lines. Large companies that have a constant need for qualified diesel mechanics often have their own in-house training. You may be able to work as an assistent or intern for pay while you learn.
