Certified Safety Professionals ensure an establishment or other entity follows safety codes to prevent injuries or environmental damage.

A certified safety professional, or CSP, is a safety expert who works with city councils, businesses and any other companies to help develop procedures, standards and specifications to reduce the likelihood of hazards that can cause harm to property, people or the environment. The CSP award must meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals; in North Carolina, aspiring CSPs can obtain necessary training to sit for this examination from the University of North Carolina, North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center.

      Obtain a two-year associate degree in health, environmental studies or safety. Applications may be eligible for training by having a four-year bachelor's degree in any field.

      Register for the Certified Safety Professional Review Course offered by the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education Research Center. Applicants may register for this course online through the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education Research Center website, or by requesting a registration application by submitting a request letter to:

      Applicants may also request a registration form by calling: 919-962-2101 or 888-235-3320. As of 2010, registration for this training course requires a $1,100 fee, which includes tuition, material fees, refreshment breaks and the certificate. This fee may be paid at the time of registration, or before the first day of class. Take note, students will not be allowed to attend the course if the aforementioned fee is not paid before the first day of class.

      Gather the required materials for the class. As of 2010, students must bring a Texas Instruments TI-30Xa calculator to class as well as a copy of the ACGIH Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices Booklet, which can be purchased from ACGIH for $60 (as of 2010).

      Arrive 15 minutes prior to the official class start time to find your seat and prepare. This course lasts four-and-a-half days and covers the following topics: Environmental Hazards, Basic and Applied Sciences, Fire Prevention and Protection, Occupational Health/Environmental Engineering, Program Management, Basic and Applied Mathematics, Legal/Regulatory and Professional Affairs, Engineering and Technology as well as a practice examination. Upon completion of this course, students are able to register for the Certified Safety Professional examination by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not apply for the CSP examination unless you have met the minimum educational requirements and completed a training course by the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education Research Center.

  • Never lie on a CSP examination application regarding educational history or completed training courses. This may result in your inability to take the examination in the future.
