How to Insert a Photo in the Body of a Message With Outlook Express
The right pictures can make an email perfect. Outlook Express for Windows XP gives you two ways to send a picture in your message: as a file attachment and as an insert. Send your photos as attachments if you simply want to share them with the recipient of your email. Insert your photos instead when you want them to appear in the body of your message. The latter is ideal when you need images to highlight or illustrate your message.

1
Create a blank message in Outlook Express. You can either click the "Create Mail" button on the toolbar or go to the "File" menu, click "New" and choose "New Mail Message." A new message composition window will appear.
-
2
Click the "Format" menu and enable "Rich Text (HTML)." Begin typing a message in the body.
-
-
3
Click the "Picture" icon on the formatting toolbar when you are ready to insert a photo. This icon appears as a colored rectangle that reads "Insert Picture" when you hover the cursor over it.
-
4
Click the "Browse" button next to "Picture Source." Locate a photo on your hard drive. Outlook Express recognizes common image file formats such as JPEG, BMP and TIFF.
-
5
Enter a text label in "Alternate Text." This is useful in case the recipient's email client has images disabled. Your recipient will see the text label instead of the picture in that case.
-
6
Determine how to align the photo relative to the text in your message. Choose an option in "Alignment." You can select middle, left, right and so on.
-
7
Customize the border line, if you want one. Type a number in "Border Thickness." Enter zero if you do not want a border around the photo. Do the same for horizontal and vertical spaces in "Spacing." If you add spacing, it will offset the photo by the amount you specify.
-

Click "OK" and view the effects. To make any changes, click the photo to select it and click the "Picture" icon again. When you are happy with your work, continue writing your message. Click the "Send" button or "Send Message" in the "File" menu when you are ready.
