Building a bookshelf isn't difficult. The basic shape of a bookshelf which is a large wooden frame and shelves that go up and down the frame. Adding detail to the bookshelf helps make the project a little more challenging. Another way to challenge yourself is by making a custom bookshelf, completely different from the standard bookshelf. This way of thinking outside the box will help you create an interesting piece of furniture.

    Things You'll Need

    • Six pinewood boards, 12-inch by 6-inch by 1/2-inch
    • Drill
    • 28 3/4-inch screws
    • Two pinewood boards, 24-inch by 6-inch by 1/2-inch
    • Sandpaper
    • Paint (any color)

        Build a square frame using four 12-inch-by-6-inch pinewood boards. Attach the boards to each other by drilling three 3/4-inch screws into each corner of the frame with the screws 1 inch apart.

        Build a second frame, this time rectangular, using two 24-inch-by-6-inch pinewood boards and two 12-inch-by-6-inch pinewood boards. Like before, each board should be a half-inch thick and attached by drilling three 3/4-inch screws into each corner of the frame with each screw 1 inch apart.

        Place the long, rectangular frame on the floor so that it is 24 inches wide by 12 inches tall, then place the smaller, square frame on top of the longer frame. Place the second frame wherever you want on top of the first frame. Note that if you place it at one end, you'll have a 12-inch space on the other side and if you place it at the center, then you'll have two 6-inch spaces on either side.

        Attach the second frame to the first by drilling four 3/4-inch screws from the center of the second frame down into the center of the first with each screw 3 inches apart.

        Sand the surfaces of both frames with sandpaper until the entire structure is completely smooth, then paint the custom bookshelf whatever color you prefer.
