How to Add File Type Associations in Firefox
If you use Firefox to browse the Internet, check email or play online games, you will potentially view and open a variety of files, including webpages (HTML files), images, videos, installation files and zipped archives. By editing Firefox's file type associations, you can specify whether you want Firefox, an installed plug-in or another program to open the file. In addition to this, you can instruct Firefox to simply download some files, which is convenient when downloading installation and program files.

Tips & Warnings
As of August 2010, the most recent stable release of Firefox is 3.6.8 and these instructions apply to that version. If you are not using the current version of Firefox, you may have to click the "Content" tab in the options screen and select "Manage" under the File Types heading to change associations.

If the content type (such as docx) is not listed under applications, how does one get that content type in the list? I'm running ff 3.6.11 and I don't have "manage" under "file types" in my content tab.
