How to Record Audio in Windows

How to Record Audio in Windows thumbnail
Record your own voice or any other audio by using Windows Sound Recorder.

All Windows operating systems come with a built-in audio recorder. While it does not have advanced features and can save audio files only in the WMA format, it does work well as a sound recorder. The Windows Sound Recorder can be set up to record audio from an external device or from a sound card.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on the speaker icon on the right side of the taskbar. Select "Recording Devices."

    • 2

Click on the "recording" tab. Right-clicking on a device and selecting "Set default device" will allow you to record from that device. If you want to record from a microphone or external device, select "Line-In/Mic-In" as the default device. If you want to record a sound or video file playing on the computer, select "What U Hear" as the default device. Click "OK" to save these changes.

    • 3

Click on the "Start" button and go to "All Programs," then "Accessories" and then "Sound Recorder."

    • 4

Click on the red "Start Recording" button and then begin playback of the audio you want to record.

    • 5

Click "Stop recording" to end the process. A menu will pop up allowing you to name the recording. Click "Save" to save the recording as a WMA file.
