How do I Fill a Mobile Propane Tank?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations state that "an attendant must be present when propane is transferred from one container to another." The attendant must inspect, connect, fill and disconnect the mobile propane tank. Mobile propane tanks are commonly used in recreational vehicles, barbecue grills and weed burners. Propane is sold in two ways: by the gallon or by weight. Mobile propane tanks will be visually inspected before filling to ensure that there are no safety hazards.

1
Close the valve on your mobile propane tank. Use the crescent wrench to disconnect the tank from the gas regulator. Transport the mobile tank to be refilled. The tank must be transported in an upright position and secured with a strap or bungee cord to keep it from rolling in your vehicle while transporting. This ensures that the vapor relief valve will work properly in case of overheating.

2
Watch the attendant fill your mobile propane tank. Determine if the price is per gallon or per pound and how much it will cost to have your tank filled. For the tank to be filled, the attendant will connect the tank to the supply hose and open a vent on your tank. Be sure the attendant is prompt about shutting the vent and turning off the supply so you do not pay for propane you do not receive. When the tank is full, which is 80 percent of capacity, the tank will emit a white vapor. This is normal, and the attendant should turn off the valve and close the vent promptly.

Transport the mobile propane tank back to your location. Be sure to transport it in an upright position and to secure the tank with the strap or bungee cord so that it does not roll in your vehicle.

Reconnect the mobile propane tank at its location using the crescent wrench. Tighten the fitting, being sure not to crimp the copper pipe that connects the tank to the appliance. Test the fitting by turning the valve on slightly and sprinkling the connections with the soapy water. If any bubbles appear, turn off the valve and tighten the connection one-quarter turn. Retest with the soapy water. When no bubbles appear, the connection is secure. Open the valve fully and use your mobile propane tank as usual.
