How to Write a Script for a Video Tutorial

Video tutorials are popular on the Internet.

Video tutorials, also know as "how-to" videos, provide instructions on how to complete a variety of tasks from cooking a roast chicken to assembling your own computers. Writing a script for a video tutorial requires expertise in your area, as well as a knowledge of what will keep people interested in your topic. Always write the script before you begin any other form of production.

Things You'll Need

• Computer with word-processing program
• Cue cards
• Marker

Instructions

1. Write down the steps to complete the task in a bullet-point format. This is the rough outline of your script and your tutorial.

2. Type up the steps on a word-processing program. Above each step, insert the name of the person who will be discussing that step in the tutorial. If there is only one person, this step is not necessary.

3. Insert any stage directions after each step. Type them in italics so they are not confused with the bulleted points, which will be spoken. Stage directions include visually showing the audience how to perform the task. You can do these directions while speaking the lines.

4. Do not elaborate the bulleted points in the script itself. Leave the lines short and to the point.The person performing in the video tutorial can then have the freedom to elaborate as he sees fit, without sounding too scripted.

5. Print the script. Write the lines and stage directions on large cue cards for the actor to read while filming, if necessary. Write the lines in one color, and the stage directions in another color.
