How to Thread a Bobbin on a Singer 3820
Singer sewing machines have been around since the mid-1800s, and are one of the most established brands of sewing machine. While older model Singer machines, such as the 3820, remain functional for many years, they are sometimes more complicated to thread than more modern models. Properly threading your machine is essential to creating successful seams.

1
Hand-crank the needle to the highest position to allow access to the bobbin housing.
-
2
Lift the plate located below the needle and presser foot.
-
-
3
Pull open the bobbin case latch and remove the bobbin case from the shuttle. The bobbin case is the smaller circular piece in the center of the larger circular piece, which is the shuttle. Notice the latch that goes across the center of the bobbin case; flip this piece up to free the case.
-
4
Hold the bobbin case so that the opening for the bobbin to fit into is facing you, and the slot for the thread moves downwards to the bottom of the case.
-
5
Insert the bobbin into the case so the tail of thread coming off the bobbin is heading in the opposite direction as the thread slot, or toward the top of the case.
-
6
Slide the thread into the slot. Keep pulling the thread downward, following the slot until it is under the tension spring. You will feel when it slips under the spring.
-
7
Replace the case into the shuttle as it was before, with the part of the case with the thread coming out of it on top. Close the case latch.
-
8
Close the metal plate beneath the needle and presser foot.
-
9
Hold the needle thread gently in your left hand while you hand crank the needle down and then back up.
-
10
Pull the needle thread to bring the bobbin thread up through the hole below the pressure foot.
