How to Tie a Head Wrap for African Americans
In Africa head wraps provide protection from the harsh rays of the sun, and their colors can indicate social status; sometimes they're worn to convey modesty. Many African Americans have embraced the traditional African head dress as a way to proudly represent their heritage and identify with African ethnology and way of life. Whether you are African or African American, the head wrap is worn the same way. Tying a head wrap can be done in several easy and simple steps. Place the head wrap around the back of your head, horizontally stretched so the longer sides reach around to the front of your face. Make sure the length of fabric on each side of your face is equal, so you have the middle of the fabric cradling your head.

Pull the right side of the wrap over your head so that it drapes on the left side of your head. The edge of the fabric should be 1 or 2 inches below your hairline.

Pull the left side of the fabric over to the right side of the head, so the fabric sits on top of your head.

Wrap the left side of the wrap around the back of your head and then drape it over the right side of your head.

Wrap the right side of the wrap around the back of your head and drape it over the left side.

Fold the two pieces that are now on top of your head together. If they are long enough, make a small knot. Secure the ends down with bobby pins to the fabric at the top or side of your head.
