How to Unzip Files on a Mac OS X

A compressed ZIP file is faster than an uncompressed file to download from the Internet or copy from one hard drive to another. The ZIP file is also smaller than the original file. Restoring, or “unzipping” the ZIP file on a Mac doesn’t require any additional software because there is a utility built into the OS X operating system expressly for this purpose. The procedure is straightforward and can be accomplished as efficiently by a novice as by an experienced Mac user.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on the ZIP file. If there is no right mouse button to click, hold down the ‘Option” key while clicking on the ZIP file with the single mouse button.

    • 2

Select “Open” from the pop-up menu.

    • 3

Wait as a window appears and a progress bar fills in from left to right before disappearing. The ZIP file has now been restored to the original uncompressed file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a copy of the ZIP file using OS X before decompressing it if you want to archive the file.
