When you want Internet access on more than one computer, a network must be created.

There was a time when each home had one computer which meant the modem could plug directly into the computer and offer Internet access. In the 21st century, however, most homes have more than one computer, which means two or more computers may want to access the Internet at the same time. Setting up two or more computers to share an AT&T DSL line takes some time up front, but once set up and configured will allow all the computers on the network to access the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a wireless modem/router device. The modem and router can be separate pieces, or a combination modem and router can be used. AT&T requires the user to purchase the device either from them or from participating retailers. Install the modem on the main computer in the home following the manufacturer's instructions.

Set up the network for the other computer. If the second computer is a desktop personal computer, ensure an Ethernet network card is installed on it. The majority of desktop computers manufactured in the last five years have built-in Ethernet cards, but if the PC is older, an adapter may have to be installed. To network a desktop PC to the modem, a networking hub will need to be installed as well. This is a small box that plugs into the Ethernet card and "talks" to the modem allowing Internet access.

If the second computer is a laptop, a wireless Ethernet card is typically built in. Click on the network icon in the bottom right corner of the screen next to the volume control. This will bring up a list of available networks. The home network should be in the list, with the name given to the network during setup. Double-click the network name and the laptop should connect. After connecting, a pop-up screen will ask if the newly established connection is public, work or home. Choose "Home" and press "OK."

Set the security protocols. Log onto the modem/router's website and follow the direction to created a secured connection. This will prevent others outside the home network from "poaching" Internet access. It also prevents a person from logging onto the network and possibly stealing information.

Tips & Warnings

  • To ensure less problems during setup, make sure any external Ethernet or wireless hubs are compatible with the modem/router device.

  • Contact AT&T and request a self-install kit. This isn't required, but can make setting up additional computers easier.

  • Make sure the purchased modem/router is compatible with AT&T DSL service. If a modem is not compatible, it could still work, but AT&T will not be able to troubleshoot any issues that might occur.
