Windows Live requires you to create a new email address if you want to sign up for its Hotmail email service. However, using Windows Live Messenger--a chatting program that can be used via your Internet browser or the messenger software--does not require you to have a Hotmail address. In fact, you can use practically any email address, including your Gmail address, to set up and sign into the Windows Live Messenger service.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Windows Live sign-in page at live.com. Click the "Sign Up" button.

    • 2

Click the "Or use your own email address" option under the "Check Availability" button. Type your Gmail email address in the "Email Address" box. Fill out the rest of the form to sign up for a Windows Live ID, including a password, your name as you want others to see it, your birth year and other required information. Type the verification letters in the box and click the "I Accept" button to continue and agree to the Microsoft service agreement.

Go to Gmail.com--the sign-in page for your Google Gmail account. Type your user name and password in the box and click "Sign in." Open the verification email from Windows Live. Click on the verification link in the email to verify your Gmail address. Click "OK" on the "Your Email Address is Verified" page.

    • 4

Click the "Messenger" button at the top of the page. Click "Add Friends" to add your contacts' email addresses to your Windows Live Messenger account. Identify friends who are signed onto Windows Live Messenger by the green dot next to a contact's name in the "Messenger" list near the top of the site. Click on a contact's name to open a chat window and start chatting.
