How to Override a Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall is a native bit of software on your computer that protects you from threats that come from the Internet. The firewall can also have a side effect of preventing you from connecting to what you actually want to use on the Internet though, such as online games or file-sharing programs. If this happens, you can override the firewall by adding an exception to Windows Firewall on your computer, allowing the desired program to "pass through."

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" in Windows and select "Control Panel."

    • 2

      Double-click "Windows Firewall."

    • 3

      Select the "Exceptions" tab.

    • 4

Click the "Add program" button. Double-click the program you wish to have override Windows Firewall.

    • 5

Check the box next to the program on the list in the Exceptions tab. Click "OK" to enable the override.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other third-party firewalls in Windows may work differently.
