How to Refill a Cross Mechanical Pencil

How to Refill a Cross Mechanical Pencil thumbnail
This mechanical pencil is similar to Cross's "Century II Lustrous Chrome" pencil.

Cross manufactures high-end pens and pencils. Their mechanical pencils range from $30-$130. They work with all standard mechanical .5-size pencil lead, which you can buy on Cross's website or at any art- or office-supply store. For different shades of lead, you can buy B lead for a darker color and 2H-4H for lighter color.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the end of the pencil by holding the writing end in your left hand and twisting clockwise with your right hand. Tip the pencil right-side up to drop out any lead remaining in it.

    • 2

Hold about five to eight pieces of lead in one hand, cupping your hand so they hold together in a clump. Slide them into the pencil. You may be able to fit a few extra, but don't overfill it or they'll jam in the tip of the pencil. Remove any jammed lead by twisting the bottom end and pulling out any lead protruding from the tip.

Screw the end back on the pencil. Hold the pencil pointing down at an angle and twist the lid counterclockwise a few times to push out new lead.
