How to Merge Images in Adobe Photoshop

If you enjoy the crafty hobbies of scrapbooking and collage but hate the gluey, papery mess or don't like destroying your photographs, try out the electronic version by merging your photos in Photoshop. Photoshop, the graphics software sold as part of the Adobe Creative Suite, offers a variety of ways to edit and change photos, but it's also a platform to simply merge and combine images together. Within a few minutes, you'll have a collection of merged images to use to show off vacation photos, family pictures or just about anything you can put together on screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop, click "File" and select "New." Type "Merge" into the "Name" box and type your preferred dimensions. For a full page of merged images, for example, type 11 in. by 8.5 in. into the "Width" and "Height" boxes and click the "OK" button.

    • 2

Click the "File" menu again and select "Open." Browse to the digital photos to merge. Photoshop supports multi-select, so press and hold down the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard, click once on each photo to use for the merge and click the "Open" button on the screen. The photos all tile into the Photoshop workspace.

    • 3

Press and hold down the "Ctrl" key, then drag and drop one picture onto the "Merge" box. Resize it by pulling down the "Edit" menu, clicking "Transform," clicking "Scale" and shrinking it to size. Click the "Move" tool, which looks like a black arrowhead and cross, and drag the photo into place.

    • 4

Repeat the drag and drop process, resizing as necessary, until all photos are on the "Merge" box. Drag photos into place, overlapping where desired. Make sure the photos do not hang off the "Merge" box into the gray Photoshop workspace or they'll be cut off.

    • 5

Click the small lines icon in the top right corner of the "Layers" palette. Select "Flatten Image." Click the "File" menu, click "Save As" and save the merged picture to your computer.
