One way to keep hydrangea blooms around all year long is to dry them. Hydrangea blossom clusters keep their shape very well when dried correctly. Their color, however fades over time. One way to correct this is with spray painting. A light coating of paint can make your hydrangea blossoms look almost as good as they did when they were fresh. Or, you can change the color of your hydrangeas to match the decor of your home or complement the colors of a special event.
Things You'll Need
- Spray paint
- Clothes line
- Clothes pins
Remove the hydrangeas' leaves and place the stems with flowers in a vase with no water. Allow them to dry upright for two weeks.
Spray each hydrangea cluster. The best way is to remove a cluster from the vase and hold it by its stem. Then hold the spray paint can 10 to 12 inches away from the hydrangea blossom and spray it lightly. A few pumps on the center and sides of the blossom should be sufficient to maintain a dried but more colorful look. If you want more color, spray again, adding light layers until you receive the hue you want.
Affix the stem of each blossom to a clothesline with a clothespin. Allow the painted hydrangea to dry upside down for 24 hours.
Tips & Warnings
- If you are harvesting hydrangeas from your garden, leave them on the bush until the end of the summer before cutting them. They retain their color and shape the best this way.
