Troubleshooting wired network connections to a router is simplified in Windows.

The network troubleshooter in Windows can automatically diagnose network connectivity issues on your computer and help you fix a problem. It can be very difficult to find out why you cannot connect to a router with a wired connection without this tool. Many problems can occur with computer networks, including issues with routers, network cables and network cards. The network troubleshooter is a good place to start when you are having trouble connecting to the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "Control panel," "Network and Internet" and "Network and sharing center." Click "Troubleshoot problems" to launch the network troubleshooter.

    • 2

Click "Internet connections" and "Next." Click "Troubleshoot my connection to the Internet." Follow the steps shown to correct the problem.

    • 3

Press the "Windows" and "R" keys if the problem still exists. Type "cmd" and press "Enter."

    • 4

Type "ipconfig /release" and wait for the command to finish. Type "ipconfig /renew." This tells your computer to attempt to retrieve a new IP address from the router.

    • 5

Check all of the cable connections from the router to the computer if the problem continues. Connect a different Ethernet cable from the router to your computer to test for a defective cable.

    • 6

Shut off your modem and router and then turn on both devices again. Restart your computer.
