How to Optimize the Advanced Settings in IE7

Internet Explorer is Microsoft's Web browser. Though Internet Explorer 8 is the most up-to-date version, previous versions, such as Internet Explorer 7, are still available. Users can customize their browsing experience by changing certain settings in Internet Explorer 7. Some of the advanced settings include scripting, appearance and security settings.

Scripting settings in Internet Explorer allow a user to decide whether to disable script debugging. The option appears as "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" under the "Browser" section. If a user allows debugging, Internet Explorer will ask whether to debug, or fix, a script error whenever one occurs. This gives the user a chance to correct errors when loading websites but also causes a pop-up message to appear every time a script error is encountered, which some consider annoying. Not allowing Explorer to fix debugging prevents error messages from appearing, but the user is unable to correct script errors. This could lead to some websites not loading properly.

Under the "Multimedia" section are options to change how websites appear. The settings allow a user to decide if Explorer loads pictures, animation and sound, among other things. With many websites being picture-heavy, choosing not to allow Explorer to load pictures could lead to missing significant parts of websites. Enabling or disabling animation on websites is a bit of a difficult choice. Allowing animation allows distracting online ads with animation when a user visits a site. Disabling animation, however, could prevent online videos from loading properly. Allowing sound is similar to animation in that it allows online ads with sound to play while a user visits sites. Disabling it could leave a user unable to hear the sound when viewing an online video.

The security options found under the "Security" section determine things such as if Explorer checks if a publisher is authentic before a user downloads a program or a is allowed to run. Enabling these options results in a pop-up warning before downloading, if a publisher cannot be authenticated, and a warning before a user runs a program. Even if a user knows a publisher is safe, if Explorer cannot authenticate the publisher, the warnings appear. Disabling these options prevents the warnings from appearing, but also could lead a user to download harmful software. Only disable these options if you are downloading from a publisher you trust but Explorer cannot authenticate.
