How to Put in an Upper Radiator Hose

The upper radiator hose in your vehicle directs the flow of coolant from the engine into the radiator. When you start the vehicle, the thermostat is closed and the coolant remains in the engine. Once the coolant heats up, the thermostat opens up and the coolant flows through the upper radiator hose and into the radiator for temperature regulation. This hose is typically replaced for repair, but it should also be replaced as part of a regular maintenance schedule. Replacing the upper radiator hose is fairly simple on most vehicles.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Channel lock pliers
• Hose clamps
• Drain pan
• Coolant

Instructions

1. Open the hood and locate the upper radiator hose. It is the rubber hose at the top of the radiator, and measures about 2 1/2 inches thick.

2. Remove the hose clamps on either end of the radiator hose. The tool needed will vary from vehicle to vehicle--some vehicles call for a screwdriver to loosen the clamps; in others the hose clamps must be compressed with channel lock pliers.

3. Place the drain pan under the radiator hose. Pull the upper radiator hose from the radiator and the engine. You may need to lightly twist the hose with the pliers to free it.

4. Place the new hose clamps over the new radiator hose. Do not tighten them.

5. Place the hose on the radiator and engine by pushing the open ends of the hose onto the inlet of both the radiator and the engine.

6. Move the two hose clamps to either end of the hose. Tighten the new hose clamps with a screwdriver.

7. Start the vehicle and allow it to reach operating temperature, approximately half way up the gauge.

8. Check the coolant level in the radiator and add fluid until it is full.

• Do not remove the radiator hose if the engine is hot.

• Only use the coolant designed for your vehicle.
