iTunes organizes .mp3 files, a popular format for digital media storage.

ITunes is a popular media player for both PC and Mac. It neatly organizes vast music and video libraries and allows for easy music sharing over home networks. Sharing your music library allows other users connected to your network to browse your own media collection and play back files on their own computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iTunes on the computer that will be sharing the music. This will be known as the host computer. Files can only be shared while iTunes is open on this computer.

    • 2

Click on the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences".

    • 3

Select the "Sharing" tab to modify network sharing options. Check the box next to "Share my library on my local network". You can now choose to share your entire media library or select playlists. You can also check the box next to "Require password" to protect your media library from unwanted users. Click "OK" to save your settings.

Open the same preferences window on the computer you want to read the shared library. Check the box next to "Look for shared libraries" and click "OK".

    • 5

Connect all computers to the same network through wired or wireless connections.

    • 6

Click on the shared library that appears on the computer's iTunes library. You can now browse, search, and play media that is located on the host computer. If a password has been set you will be prompted to enter it at this time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Computers can both share libraries and look for shared libraries at the same time. PC's and Mac's on the same network can share iTunes libraries with each other.
