How to Make Signs With Microsoft Publisher
The Microsoft Publisher program is desktop publishing layout and design software that comes as part of the Microsoft Office Suite Professional version. Publisher makes creating publications such as brochures, postcards, catalogs and menus quick through its collection of in-program templates. Publisher also comes standard with a large number of sign templates. Capture attention for just about any occasion by using Publisher to create and customize your own sign.

Open Publisher. The "Available Template" pane appears. Click the "Signs" button.

Scroll through the different template designs, such as "Private Property," "For Sale," "Handicapped Parking" and "Keep Out." You can customize all the signs with text and colors. Double-click a sign to open it in the Publisher workspace.

Click into one of the text boxes on the sign. The words become highlighted. Type directly over the placeholder words with your own, such as "Book Club Meets Here" or "Ed's Room." Highlight the new text, click the "Home" tab at the top of the screen and use the "Font" section to change the words' font, text size, color and position. Repeat for the rest of the text boxes on the sign.

Right-click a placeholder image on the sign and select "Change Picture." Click "Change Picture" again. A navigation window opens. Browse to a digital picture to use for the sign and double-click it. It appears in place on the sign. If you don't have your own picture to use, click once on the image and press the "Delete" key to remove it from the sign. Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the screen, click "Clip Art" and type a word or phrase into the "Search for" box. Click "Go." Scroll through the results and double-click an image to add it to the sign.

Give the sign a background color by clicking the "Page Design" tab at the top of the screen and clicking the "Background" button on the right side of the toolbar. Click one of the background options from the drop-down menu to change the background color of the sign instantly.

Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Type a name for the sign and save it to your computer.
