How to Get a Free Internet Connection on Ubuntu Linux thumbnail
There are a number of places you can get free wireless Internet.

Ubuntu is a user-friendly, comprehensive operating system---the most popular version of Linux as of 2010. Developed to meet the average user's needs, Ubuntu comes with all the necessary features and utilities for everyday computing. Once you have wireless Internet working, you can surf the Web anywhere that you can find a usable signal. There are numerous places that have free wireless that you can connect to.

Instructions

    • 1

Find somewhere that offers a free wireless connection. Some common places are coffee shops, public libraries, downtown areas of many larger cities, some grocery stores, fast food restaurants and university campuses.

    • 2

Turn on your computer and wait for Ubuntu to load up. Once loaded, a bubble pops up in the upper-right menu bar that says "Wireless Connections Available."

    • 3

Click the Internet Connection Applet right above the bubble that popped up. It looks like a little wireless tower with progressively larger bars coming out of it. This lists all available connections, including ones locked by a passcode (these will have a small lock next to them).

Look for a signal without a lock by it, preferably the one with the most bars, and click it. This connects you to the free wireless signal.
