How to Make Smileys Online
Smileys have been around since bulletin boards in the early 1980s where one man attempted to convey feelings via text. For this reason, smileys are also known commonly as "emoticons" because they attempt to convey emotions. You can use smileys wherever you want to, but only certain programs--such as e-mail programs and instant messaging clients--will translate them into actual images. Some programs even translate them into animated images.
Instructions

-
1
Decide what type of emotion you want to convey.
-
2
Pick a medium for your emoticon, such as an instant messaging client.
-
-
3
Pick someone to convey the emoticon to and open a chat window, e-mail or start writing a letter to them.
-
4
Use a colon to start and then add a paren--either "(" or ")"--for a very basic happy or sad smiley. For example :) is a smile and :( is a frown.
-
5
Look up more advanced smileys online. Some programs even have hidden smileys. Yahoo! Instant Messenger, for example, turns "**==" (without the quotes) into the American flag.
