How to Use Glass Watering Balls

Using watering balls in your houseplants provides water when you are away.

Glass watering balls are designed to provide a slow source of water for your plants while adding a decorative flair to the arrangement. Inexpensive watering balls may leave a bit to be desired in appearance, but there are many designs that add a sophisticated air to your home. Whether you choose to use inexpensive watering balls simply for the convenience, or prefer to shop for one that you can display with pride, they all follow the same basic principle.

Things You'll Need

• Watering ball
• Plant
• Distilled water

Instructions

1. Insert the base of the watering ball into the soil about halfway between the base of the plant and the side of the plant pot. Position it so that it rests at an angle. Experiment with several placements until you get the look you prefer.

2. Remove the watering ball from the plant. Rinse away soil to prevent it from blocking the watering tube.

3. Fill the watering ball 2/3 full with distilled water. Tap water may be used if allowed to set overnight.

4. Insert the watering ball into the soil at the desired location.

5. Firm the soil around the base of the watering ball tube to secure the ball in place.

6. Check the watering ball every few days to determine the water level. Refill when the ball is empty.
