How to Connect a Microphone Headset to a Computer

All computer sound cards have a plug (also called a "line") that is specifically designed for the purpose of connecting a microphone to the machine. These sound cards also have a line used to connect speakers to your computer. In the case of a microphone headset, you will need to use both to connect your device to your PC. A microphone headset will have two cables connected to it: one so that audio can be sent through the microphone to the computer, and the other so that audio can be sent through the computer to the headset speaker.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your computer's sound card. You will more than likely have to physically turn your computer's case around so that you can see the back panel because this is where the sound card is located. The sound card will be what your computer's speakers are currently plugged into (if applicable).

    • 2

Plug the microphone cable on your headset microphone into the "Mic" line on your sound card. The line will have a small graphical image of a microphone above it and will be green in color.

    • 3

Plug the second cable on your headset microphone into the "Speaker" line on your sound card. The line will have a small graphical image of a speaker above it and will be pink in color. Your headset microphone is now properly connected to your computer.
