Cutting a whole watermelon is a messy endeavor. For a fruit tray, watermelon should be cut into manageable bite-sized pieces. Instead of scooping out the interior of the melon and cutting it on a cutting board, can cut the watermelon cubes directly in the melon. This will make the task less messy and will keep the water in the melon. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Whole watermelon
  • Sharp knife
  • Bowl
  • Container with lid

Instructions

      Cut the watermelon in half horizontally (along its length).

      Cut each half of the watermelon in half again lengthwise.

      Cut evenly spaced horizontal lines (about 1 in. apart) into the watermelon. Cut 1 in. to 2 in. deep into the watermelon.

      Cut vertical lines in the watermelon. Space the vertical lines 1 in. apart and make them the same depth as the horizontal lines.

      Remove seeds with the tip of the knife. Place the watermelon chunks into a bowl until you are ready to serve them on the fruit tray. Continue to make vertical and horizontal lines until you have cut all of the watermelon.

      Store the watermelon cubes in a covered container in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for 3 to 5 days.
