How to Clean HP Deskjet Cartridges
If you have ever purchased replacement ink cartridges for your HP deskjet printer, you already know how expensive they can be. In some cases, the cost of a single set of replacement cartridges can be as much as, or even more than, the original purchase price of the printer. With so much money at stake, it makes sense to clean your cartridges often and keep them in the best possible shape. Cleaning your cartridges removes the ink residue that would otherwise build up, thus extending the life of each ink cartridge.
Instructions

1
Open the top cover of the deskjet printer and wait for the print cartridges to move to the center. Never attempt to move the cartridge carrier by hand---doing so could damage the printer and void your warranty.
-
2
Tilt the cartridge forward slightly and pull it out of the printer. Turn the cartridge so that the metal plate is facing up.
-
-
3
Dip a cotton swab in a glass of warm water and carefully clean the entire surface of the metal plate. Continue swabbing the cartridge until you have removed all toner residue and paper dust.
-
4
Swab the cartridge with isopropyl alcohol instead of warm water if the ink buildup is very heavy. The alcohol will loosen the ink and make it easier to remove.
-
5
Place the ink cartridges back in the printer and print a test page. Remove and clean the cartridges again if the print quality is poor.
