How to Find a Premarital Counselor

How to Find a Premarital Counselor thumbnail
Premarital counseling helps couples look beyond the wedding to prepare for the marriage.

More than half of American marriages end in divorce, according to the website Good Therapy; receiving premarital counseling is one way couples can learn the communication skills and conflict resolution strategies needed for a long, healthy relationship. When searching for a premarital counselor, remember that not all premarital counselors are actually trained therapists. Finding a counselor who respects your values and goals is key to building trust and gaining the most from the experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a licensed marriage, family and child counselor (LMFCC) and ask for recommendations. Call the mental health center in your area if you are unsure of where to find an LMFCC.

    • 2

Speak to your religious adviser or the person you have asked to officiate at your wedding. Clergy members from most religious traditions offer premarital counseling based on the tenets of that religion.

    • 3

Attend a bridal fair. Wedding professionals of all kinds--including premarital counselors--participate in bridal fairs in an effort to build their businesses.

    • 4

Ask recently married friends or family members about their experience with premarital counseling.

    • 5

Consult with your wedding planner. Even if your planner does not have a direct connection with a premarital counselor, he will have a wide network of wedding-related colleagues to confer with.
