Zumba is a dance aerobic fitness routine created in Columbia in 1999 by Beto Perez. The fitness routine combines Latin inspired dance moves with aerobic calorie-burning movements. The combination of slow and fast movements are set to Latin music, which encourages participants to really move, dance and get involved in the Zumba routine; while toning the body and burning fat. Since it's inception, more than 60,000 Zumba classes have been taught in 105 countries.

      Talk to a health care provider. When starting any type of new fitness regimen, speaking with a doctor or health care provider should be considered. Zumba dance fitness may not be suitable for persons with certain health conditions. A physician will be able to clear any concerns a potential Zumba participant may have in regards to health or physical ability to perform the Zumba routines.

      Pick how you want to learn Zumba. Zumba can be executed in a class with an instructor or at home utilizing DVDs. Many fitness centers across the country have included Zumba classes as apart of their fitness curriculum. Classes can be found on the Zumba website or by contacting local fitness centers like the YMCA. The Zumba website also offers instructional DVDs for purchase that may be viewed in the privacy of your home or with a bunch of friends.

      Perform a warmup routine. Before you begin the exciting yet rigorous Zumba routine, you will need to do a five- to 10-minute warmup. The warmup is important before beginning a Zumba fitness routine because it prepares the body for the movements it will endure. The warmup will allow the body's temperature to rise gradually and will help the body get into a flexible form. Stretching and performing slow dance movements movements are acceptable ways to warm up. Once the warmup is complete, participants may begin the Zumba fitness routine.
