How to Fix a Rubber Jump Rope

How to Fix a Rubber Jump Rope thumbnail
Weighted rubber jump ropes tone muscles and improve agility.

You can fix a rubber jump rope to get it swinging smoothly again. Heavy rubber jump ropes are used by many speed jumpers because the even weight of the rope moves quickly and predictably. When the handles or rubber rope itself are damaged this balance is thrown off, sending the rope off course. Repair an old broken rubber jump rope to get it working again and avoid the cost of buying a replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Acetone (nail polish remover)

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the broken ends of a separated rubber jump rope with acetone and allow them to air dry.

    • 2

Apply a few drops of silicone rubber adhesive or flexible multipurpose cement to both cleaned ends and press them together. Rest the glued section on a sheet of aluminum foil to keep it from sticking to the surface. Allow the glue to cure completely according to the manufacturer's instruction on the specific adhesive you are using.

    • 3

Lubricate the bearings, springs or swivel joint in the handle with a light coat of silicone lubricant. Wipe away excess lubricant with a clean paper towel to avoid dripping.

    • 4

Wrap damaged rubber jump rope handles with self-adhesive cushioned grip tape to create a more comfortable grip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rubber jump ropes with a line that has worn thin and broken in several places may need to be replaced. Small repairs to one or two sections can be made without effecting the overall balance of the jump rope.

  • Store jump rope loosely coiled and laying flat instead of hanging from a hook to extend the life of the rubber.
