How to Pull Out the Back Seat in a Mustang

Easily remove your Mustang's rear seat.

The Ford Mustang is a mass-produced sports car whose formula has not changed since its introduction in the mid-1960s. Available as a fastback coupe or a convertible, the Mustang comes with six-cylinder power or an optional V-8, just like the original. Some Mustang owners may want to extract every bit of horsepower from their vehicles as possible. Lightening the vehicle helps, and removing the rear seat also removes several horsepower-robbing pounds. You may also need to remove the rear seat to reupholster it.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the front bucket seats forward as far as they will go to make more working room in the rear seat area. Tilt the front seat backs forward.

    • 2

Access the two rear seat bottom release buttons which are under the lower front edge of the seat bottom on both sides. Push in on both buttons at once while raising the front edge of the seat from the floor. Pull the seat bottom out of the vehicle.

    • 3

Locate the three retaining bolts on the mounting tabs of the rear seat headrest. Remove the bolts with a socket and ratchet then remove the headrest from the car.

    • 4

Place the seat back in the upright and locked position. Remove the four bolts holding the lower part of the seat back to the car body with a socket and ratchet. Now push the seat back release button and rotate it downwards to reveal the two upper bolts. Remove these bolts in the same fashion.

    • 5

Lift the seat back from the passenger area and from the vehicle with the help of an assistant. Use care as the seat back is very heavy and may scratch or damage the surrounding trim when it's removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • The above procedure is for rear seat removal in 1999 to 2004 Mustangs. The procedure for other years of Mustangs may be slightly different. The rear seat removal in some older Mustangs is not as complicated. Lift up on the leading edge of the lower seat cushion to release it from the retaining clips. Lift the cushion out at an angle and remove it from the vehicle. Lift the seat back straight up a few inches, then pull it straight out and remove it from the vehicle.
