How to Make a Torrent With uTorrent

Torrents allow for sharing files across the Internet, and uTorrent makes the process very easy. All sorts of files--from programs to videos to picture sets--can be shared across the Internet from your computer. You will need to use "trackers" to send a torrent, which can be used from host websites, or with recent versions of uTorrent, you can even create your own tracker. Once you pick a host website, you can upload your torrent for anyone to download.

Open uTorrent. When the uTorrent window appears, click "File" and "Create New Torrent." A new window will appear, with a box at the top for "Select Source"; click the button that says "add file" and a new box will open for allowing you to browse files, or click the button that says "add directory" if you want to turn a folder into a torrent. Choose the file or folder that you want to make into a torrent and click "open."

Enter your trackers into the "trackers" box; host sites sometimes offer their own trackers (once you pick your host site, you can find this information). Enter the trackers into the tracker box; for example, enter "http://www.sumotracker.com/announce" to use sumotracker. You must double-space the lines between trackers. Other public trackers include: "http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce," "http://torrent-downloads.to:5869/announce," "http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce," "http://pirates.sumotracker.com/announce." Enter any of these.

    • 3

Enter a "comment" for your torrent in the comment box beneath the trackers for display purposes. Click "create and save as . . ." to allow uTorrent to create the torrent, and you can save the torrent to your computer (possibly to a torrent folder you created, or alongside the original file).

Choose a host site, such as Seed Peer, Mininova, or Torrent Downloads, and find the "upload" option (see Resources). On the upload page, find an option for browsing files to upload. Find your torrent file and click "open." Torrent sites may include other options, such as a place for entering more comments about your torrent or categorizing it. Submit the torrent to make it available for download.
