How to Set Up PS3 Surround Sound
The Playstation 3 video game console is a good DVD and Blu-Ray player, in addition to providing high-definition gaming experiences. If you wish to maximize its potential, connect this console to a decent surround-sound system. As with its main competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, there are two main ways to extract surround-sound signals. The manner in which you connect it will depend on the receiver or processor you use in the home-theater environment.
Things You'll Need
- PS3 console
- PS3 controller
- HDMI or optical cable

Connect the HDMI and/or optical audio cable to the rear panel of the PS3. Select either "HDMI" or "Optical Digital." It is possible to connect both. If this is desired, enable the "Audio Multi-Out" selection in the "Sound Settings" submenu to "On." Press the "O" button to exit and save.

Turn on the home-theater receiver or processor. Use the unit's remote to navigate to the audio setup menu. Assign the optical or HDMI input if needed, or simply plug the chosen audio cables into the rear of the receiver at a free corresponding output. Consult the unit's manual for specific steps, if neccessary.

Tips & Warnings
If you use an HDMI cable, it will be best to use it for audio and video in most cases. Connect the supplied composite video cable to the rear of the PS3 to navigate the menus, then remove it once the HDMI cable is connected and the system is set up.
Remember that only an HDMI cable can carry lossless audio (and 7.1 surround) from Blu-Ray discs. Optical cables will work, but cannot carry the same amount of data as an HDMI cable.
