PDF files, short for Portable Document Files, are a universally used file format among businesses and individuals for transferring graphical and textual data. PDFs are known for ease of use and portability between multiple computers through their use as a common email attachment format. PDF files can be created and edited with multiple types of software. A feature that many people utilize when creating PDF files is the incorporation of editable text boxes for documents such as forms.

Creating Editable Text Boxes With Acrobat

Start Adobe Acrobat with the Windows Start menu by clicking "Start," "Program Files" and then "Adobe Acrobat." The program will open in a new window.

Create a new PDF file by clicking "File," "Create PDF" and then "From Blank Page." A new blank page will open in a similar fashion to a word processing program. Add data to the PDF form to begin creating your document.

Click on "Tools," "Comment and Markup" and then "Text Box Tool" from the top pull-down menu to create a new text box. Click and drag the rectangular space on your document to create a text box on your PDF document.

Save the changes to your form and publish it as a PDF by clicking "File" and "Save" from the top pull-down menu.
Creating Editable Text Boxes With Nitro

Open Nitro PDF from the Windows Start menu by clicking "Start," "Program Files," "Nitro PDF" and then "Nitro PDF." The program will open in a new window.

Create a new PDF form by clicking "File" then "New..." from the top pull-down menu. A new blank page will be created in which you can add text for your form.

Click on the "Forms" tab at the top of the Nitro PDF interface. Click the "Text Field" button to activate the Text Field Creation tool. Click and drag the rectangular space on the document workspace to create a new text box.

Click "File" then "Save" from the top pull-down menu to save the changes to your PDF form.
