How to Make an AVI Play Backwards

AVI files are video files that are compatible with most video players and devices, and they're used for anything from feature-length movies to videos shot on personal camcorders. Sometimes when watching an AVI file you may have wondered what the video would like playing backwards, but most players don't support backwards playback of video files. There are ways though to make a video play backwards, either by using Quicktime or by re-encoding and creating a copy of the original video that is in reverse.

Instructions

  1. Using Quicktime

    • 1

Download and install Quicktime (see Resources). Launch the program after installation is complete.

    • 2

Go to "File" then "Open File." Select the AVI you want to play and then click "Open."

    • 3

Hold the Shift key on your keyboard and double-click on the video file in Quicktime. As long as you hold the Shift key it will play in reverse.

    Using Video Time Reversal

    • 4

Go to the Xander's Web website (see Resources) and download the French version of Video Time Reversal. (The English version does not work properly.)

    • 5

Click on the "Parcourir" button. Select the AVI you want to reverse and click "Open."

    • 6

Click on "Reverse AVI!" and the program will create a new version of your AVI file in the same directory with the word "reverse" after it. This version will play backwards.

    Using Avidemux

    • 7

Download and install Avidemux. Launch the program after installation is complete.

    • 8

Go to "File" then "Open." Double-click on the AVI file you want to open it in the program.

    • 9

Click on the first drop down menu under "Video" and select "MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid)."

    • 10

Click on "Filters" to open the Video Filter Manager. Go to the "Transform" tab and double-click on "Reverse" then click "Close."

    • 11

Go to "File" then "Save" and "Save Video." Name your video and add ".avi" after the file name. Click "Save." Avidemux will create a new version of the AVI file that is playing backwards.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may be prompted to install codecs in Quicktime if you want to play certain AVI files.

  • Of all these methods, only Quicktime will also playback the audio in reverse.
