How to Connect a Subwoofer to a TV

How to Connect a Subwoofer to a TV thumbnail
Connect a subwoofer to the TV's left audio output jack for extra bass.

A powered subwoofer can be connected to a TV by using one of the television's audio output jacks to send a mono signal to the subwoofer. A subwoofer cable with a ¼-inch plug on each end connects the two components. Use a powered subwoofer because the TV's amplifier is only powerful enough to drive the built-in speakers. Care must also be used in setting the subwoofer volume, which may overpower the TV's speakers if it is turned up too high.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the TV and unplug the subwoofer power cord.

    • 2

Insert the plug on one end of the subwoofer cable into the TV's left audio output jack, which may be colored white for easy identification. Do not connect anything to the right (red) audio output jack.

    • 3

Connect the other end of the cable to the input jack on the rear of the subwoofer and plug the subwoofer power cord into a wall outlet.

    • 4

Turn on the TV and the subwoofer. Gradually adjust the volume control knob on the back of the subwoofer to a level that complements, but does not overpower, the TV's built-in speakers.
