DVD-ripping software creates files on your hard drive from the source DVD and lets you convert the files to any format with free software. After decrypting the files from the source DVD, you can compress the files and upload them to the Internet or store them on your hard drive, saving disc space. You also can take the DVD programs with you on a laptop, without having to carry a separate DVD case.

Instructions

  1. DVD Video Soft

      Download and install the free DVD decrypter from DVD Video Soft (see Resources). Run the software.

      Insert your source DVD in the disc drive. Click the drop-down menu next to "Source DVD" and choose your "D:\" drive.

      Click "Browse" next to "Output folder" and look for the folder where you want to save your decrypted files. Double-click the output folder.

      Click "Save to PC" to start the process. Depending on your DVD drive, decrypting could take half an hour or more.

    Free Star DVD Ripper

      Download and install the free software from the Free Star website (see Resources). Run the software.

      Insert the DVD you want to decrypt and click "Open DVD." Double-click your "D:\" drive in the pop-up window.

      Check the box next to each file you want to rip from the DVD. Click the "General Options" tab at the bottom of the screen.

      Click the drop-down menu next to "Profile" and drag the mouse to the file format you want to convert your DVD to. Click "Browse" to choose the output folder for your file.

      Click "Rip" to begin decrypting the disc. Watch your progress in the "percentage complete" bar at the bottom of the screen.

    WinX Free DVD Ripper

      Download and install the free DVD-ripping software from the WinX DVD website (see Resources). Run the software.

      Insert your DVD in the computer. Click "DVD Disc" and "OK" to load the disc.

      Click AVI, MPEG, MP4, WMV, MOV or FLV at the bottom of the screen to choose your output format. Click "Start" to decrypt the files from your DVD.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean your DVDs before using a decrypter to make the process easier on your drive.

  • Newer DVD drives decrypt discs more smoothly than older drives.
