How to Locate the MICR Code

MICR is the typeface used to encode checks.

MICR is short for magnetic ink character recognition. It is printed on checks using a special font which is used throughout North America. Pronounced "My-kur" code, the MICR specifically refers to the typeface which must be used to print the characters at the bottom of a check. The ink used must also be magnetic. This encoding allows checks to be read with inexpensive machines which can process large amounts of checks on a daily basis. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) develops all MICR printing standards.

Instructions

1. Obtain a regular check issued by a bank in North America. See Resources for an example.

2. Review the primary features of the MICR code. The typeface has 14 characters which include the numbers zero through through, as well as four other symbols called Transit, Amount, On-Us and Dash. Each symbol measures 1/8 of an inch.

3. Look toward the bottom of the check. The MICR code is used for three or four separate line items on the check. It usually includes the routing number, account number and check number.

Tips & Warnings

• MICR is also used to encode other documents in need of a security code such as tickets, coupons, credit cards and receipts.
