Perler or hama beads are cylinder-shaped beads you can use to create designs and fuse together with heat. They come in a large selection of colors and are made of plastic. Perler, or fuse beads, are mostly used to create pixelated images for kids or can be more detailed for large-scale image projects. You can make your own coasters or just pictures to hang. It's a simple craft anyone can accomplish.
Things You'll Need
- Perler beads
- Parchment paper
Place the perler or hama beads on the pegboard in a desired pattern or image you want to create. They should lay flat with one end of the bead on one peg on the pegboard. You can create an image or project as large as you wish. The pegboards snap together for larger projects.
Place the piece of parchment paper over your beads on the pegboards. Be careful not to move the beads or they will fuse together incorrectly and your project won't look right. Make sure the parchment paper is covering your entire project. If you need to, you can use several pieces of the parchment paper in order to make sure it is completely covered. This prevents the iron from sticking to the beads during the fusing process.
Turn on your iron to medium heat. Place the iron on top of the parchment paper keeping it completely flat as to not dislodge beads from the pegboard. Slowly rub the iron over the entire project keeping it on the parchment paper. The heat of the iron will fuse them together by slightly melting the beads into each other.
Remove the parchment paper by slowly peeling it off of your project. Place a stack of books or magazines on top of your project until it cools to prevent it from warping. Once it's cooled after about a half hour the beads are successfully fused. Lift the fused bead design off the pegboard. Your project is completed and ready to hang or frame.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not over iron your project or it will not look right and become too flat.
- If children are doing this craft, make sure an adult does the ironing for safety of not getting burned.
