How to Unlock an Apple Remote

The Apple remote control that comes with the Apple TV digital media receiver (it's also sold separately) is designed to work with one specific Macintosh at a time, for example, a Macintosh laptop like the MacBook or MacBook Pro. The Apple remote must be "unlocked" if it is to be used with another Mac. The procedure involves changing a few settings on the Mac's operating system so that the Apple remote is free to be connected elsewhere. No additional software must be downloaded or installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the "Apple" menu at the top of the screen. Select "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu to bring up a window on the desktop.

    • 2

Select the "Security" icon that is beneath the "View" tab. Click the padlock in the lower-left corner of the window that appears. Enter the administration password in the "Password" text field of the pop-up window that appears. Click the "OK" button on the pop-up window to make it disappear.

    • 3

Click the "Unpair" button on the window that is still on the desktop. Click the "OK" button to make the window go away.

    • 4

Click the "Security" icon on the window that is still open again. Check the "Disable remote control infrared receiver" check box on the window that appears.

    • 5

Click on the padlock in the lower left corner to close it. Close the window by clicking the red button in its upper left corner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't allow anything to block the line of sight between the Apple remote and the Apple device it works with.
